Locavores: Helping the environment or wasting their efforts?

This might seem like a no-brainer to most people but eating locally-grown foods as a way to help the planet is coming under fire by some as a wasted and “not-so-green-after-all” effort. I’m not necessarily buying all of these arguments but in a nutshell they claim that buying and eating local makes for lots of wasted energy and resources in the form of inefficient operations. For example, growing a few tomatoes in a backyard garden costs more per tomato in time, energy, and even money in some cases than it does for a professional farmer who grows a larger volume at once. Some say that shifting towards local goods makes such a small difference it’s practically pointless.

What do you think? I think it’s worth it, even if it is just a small difference for some products. Better a tomato from across town than one from across the country — every little bit helps!
